Everything You Need to Know About the FMGE Exam in India

The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) is a licensure examination that Indian students who complete their MBBS or equivalent medical degrees from abroad need to clear in order to practice medicine in India. In this comprehensive guide, we will cover all key details related to the FMGE exam – registration process, exam format, syllabus, pass percentage, and tips to crack this challenging test.

FMGE Exam - Purpose and Eligibility

The FMGE exam aims to ensure that overseas medical graduates meet the standards and quality required to practice medicine safely in India. Only those candidates who possess a primary medical qualification from universities outside India and are citizens of India can appear for this test. You need a valid MCI Eligibility Certificate to confirm your eligibility for the exam. The FMGE test must be cleared within 3 years of completing your foreign MBBS.

FMGE Registration Process

The FMGE registration is done completely online through the official NBE website at nbe.edu.in. The application window usually opens in October-November each year for the exam conducted in June next year. To register, you need to create an account and fill the application form with personal details, upload scanned copies of documents like passport, MBBS degree certificate, MCI eligibility certificate and pay the exam fee. Registration deadline is typically end of November.

FMGE Exam Format

FMGE is a computer-based multiple choice question test of 4 hours duration. It consists of 200 MCQs divided between:

The exam interface is in English only. Questions cover a wide range of topics from the MBBS curriculum to assess application-based competencies expected from a medical graduate.

FMGE Exam Syllabus

The FMGE exam syllabus includes subjects studied during the MBBS course:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology

When registering, candidates can select 2 preferred exam city choices based on seat availability. Center allocation is done on first-come-first-serve basis. The FMGE admit card indicates your confirmed exam center details.

FMGE Exam Dates

The FMGE exam is conducted twice a year – generally in the months of June and December. NBE announces the exact FMGE exam dates and schedule months in advance on their official website.
